USA’S NON-TEST MATCHES (11.06)

The USA’s matches in the recent Churchill Cup were unfortunately not all ‘test’ matches for the USA. Only the match v Canada is regarded as a test match. A similar policy also exists for team like Tonga and Samoa in the Pacific Nations competition. I cannot understand this situation as the matches all contribute towards the final result of the competition. Unfortunately the USA v Scotland Á’ and USA v England Saxons matches will be withdrawn from my official records.

India 11, Philippines 3 in Manilla (Asia Nations Series, Div.5)

Preview

India and Philippines have both defeated Guam last week so this match will basically be the final. It should be an even game but with the Philippines have home ground advantage.

30.06.2007

Australia 20, New Zealand 15 in Melbourne (Bledisloe Cup & Tri Nations)

It looks like the only real contenders for this trophy is Australia and New Zealand following the highly controversial decision by South Africa to rest their top 20 players before this year’s Rugby World Cup.

South Africa Amateur v Madagascar in Antananarivo (Africa Cup, Div.1, South B)

This watch was brought back from last weekend. The South Africans can expect a torrid time in Antannarivo from a local crowd that is expected to reach 30,000 such is the level of interest in the game of rugby on the African island nation.

Tanzania 53, Rwanda 6 in Arusha (CAR Castel Cup, Div.2, South A)

This tournament has been reduced in size following the withdrawal of the Burundians. The Rwandans nearly didn’t make it as well. The players dipped into their own pockets after the Rwanda sports ministry refused financial support just before team departure. Tanzania is sure favourites to take this section as they have already defeated Mayotte 18-11. They also defeated Rwanda last year by over 50 points.

TANZANIA RETAINS CAR CASTEL TITLE

2007-07-02 08:32:05

By Hamis Kaffana, Arusha

Tanzania have retained the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) Castel title here. This is the third time for the team known as The Twigas to clinch the title for three years consecutively, after winning it last year and in 2005. They were declared the champions after crushing Rwanda 53-6 at Friedkin Recreation Centre grounds on Saturday. Tanzanias Oliver Quelente scored 10 trios, Jeremy Stephenson (5) and Justine Trappe (1) to make their team lead 17 in the first half. Lucrean Bikamba scored two penalties in the second half to award Rwanda six points. Freel Kabisu scored 10 trios while Aart Koster, Boaz Magege and Joshua Peterson scored fives trios each to increase 38 points for the home team in the second half.

Tanzania also defeated second placed Mayotte Islands 18-11 in the opening match before Mayotte slapped Rwanda 58-0 in the second match last week. Four Kenyans appointed by the International Rugby Board (IRB) officiated the three nations championship. They are Nicholas Gachoya, Touch Judges, Christopher Okumu and Anthony Marete.

Tanzania, the winners of Group A, were awarded trophy while Mayotte Islands and Rwanda got silver and bronze medals respectively. Tanzania now waits to play Group B winners in August in the next stage of the competition.

Teams who are competing in Group B are Botswana, Re-Union, Mauritius and Swaziland.

MAYOTTE ISLANDS HAMMER UNDERDOGS RWANDA IN CASTEL

2007-06-30 08:21:32

By Hamis Kaffana, Arusha

Mayotte Islands slapped Rwanda 58-0 in the second match of the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) Castel Regional Super 16 at the Friedkin Recreation Centre here on Thursday. Mayotte, who was beaten by Tanzania 18-11 in the first match, began the match by high speed through which they managed to score 41 points at the first half. Maxime Meumer, Phillipe Jupuy, Cyril Fauc, Eric Landman and Yues Sammer scored five trios each to make Mayotte reach 41 points.

In the second half, Rwanda`s Aima Ndairwa, Marcel Cambarakoko and Janviel Bunani tried hard to attack their rivals but met a strong wall from Mayotte`s Olivier Martin, Cedrick Despalle and Charles Mollandin.

Mayotte`s Sebastian Alcaide converted six conversions to enable his team obtain 58 points at the end of the game. Janviel Bunani of Rwanda was awarded red card in the 66th minute for misconduct.

Rwanda coach Eugene Murenjekha claimed that his team lost the game because of a long and tedious journey to Arusha. `Our journey to Arusha was not so smooth. We travelled by bus from Kigali via Kampala and Nairobi to Arusha. As soon as we alight from the bus, we went straight to the ground to play Mayotte,` he claimed.

The tournament continues today when Tanzania face Rwanda.

TANZANIA START WELL AT CAR IN ARUSHA

2007-06-28 08:32:17

By Hamis Kaffana, Arusha

Tanzania started defending their title in remarkable style when they clobbered Mayotte Islands 18-11 in the opening match of the Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) Castel Regional Super 16 played at Fredklin Recreation Centre here yesterday. The home side were initially scheduled to play Rwanda in the match but due to the late arrival of the visitors, the fixture was changed.

Chris Hatt, Aart Koster and Justine Trappe started the game competently and successfully managed to score 15 points for Tanzania at the first round. It was Boazi Magege, Koster and Trappe who scored one trio each in the 5th, 7th, and 16th minutes respectively, earning 15 leading points for Tanzania. Mayotte's Nicholas Arbert `Lion`, Blazil Julien and Steven Cap fought hard by attacking their rivals in the first half, the struggle that yielded the team at least eight points before the end of the first round. Saidi Hamadi scored one try in the 30th minutes before Sebastian Alcaide secured two penalties in the 17th and 20th minutes to earn eight points to Mayotte side.

The tournament continues today when Mayotte take on Rwanda. “

Uganda 20, Namibia 19 in Kampala (Africa Cup, Div.1, South A)

Uganda forced a major rugby upset when they just edged out Africa’s number two nation. The Namibians had already qualified for the Rugby World Cup finals in France later this year and had performed well at the recent IRB Nations Cup held in Romania. The Ugandans recently defeated neighbours Kenya 29-10 and again proved today that they are a new African rugby force.

MUMBAI: Flanker Mike Cassidy will lead Guam in an rugby international match against India at the Bombay Gymkhana on Saturday. FIVE NATIONS RUGBY COMING TO ASIA (15.06)

Asian rugby is in for some major changes next year. At present Asia rugby is structured into 7 divisions each with three teams. In 2008 there will be 3 top divisions (Premier, Div.1 and Div.2) each with six teams. Promotion and relegation will apply in the same as it did in 2007. The main difference, apart from the six teams, is that they will play a home-and-away basis. It looks like there will only be the first 2 divisions playing at the Asian Rugby Tournament at the end of each season, the Asia Series being seeding for the tournament. Teams below the top 2 divisions will be catered for in other unspecified ways.
