THE LION OF ARUSH (01.12.2006)

Article here about John Lloyd of Tanzania

http://allafrica.com/stories/200611280999.html

THIS WEEKEND 2 DECEMBER

Phew! What a busy month November is! Its one of the busiest months of the year for a school teacher here in Australia and one of the busiest on the international rugby scene. The big news is the expected removal of Andy Robinson, England’s coach, was more a matter of when rather than if. The ‘when’ occurred last Wednesday.

There is only one international rugby match of note this weekend, if you leave out the World XV v South Africa game.

CASTEL CUP MATCH NOW IN DECEMBER (28.11)

“Although no official notice has yet been posted on the CAR website, we in Tanzania have been told that the 2006 Castel Cup Super-16 (second division) final will be played here on 16 December. Niger will travel to Arusha for the match. We are now awaiting confirmation from CAR that Niger has finalized its travel arrangements”

THIS WEEKEND 25-26 NOVEMBER

Because of work commitments coverage of matches this weekend may be minimal

26.11.2006

Ireland 61, Pacific Islands 17 in Dublin

Ireland won by 44 points. I predicted Ireland by 12

Preview

Ireland will be too strong. They are having a wonderful season so far.

Reviews

25.11.2006

New Zealand 45, Wales 10 in Cardiff

New Zealand won by 35 points. I predicted NZ by 15

A bigger than expected win for the Kiwis. A big disappointment for a resurging Wales.

Reviews

Preview

Wales are probably as strong at present as they were two seasons ago when they took the 6 nations Championship. But are they good enough to take on and succeed against an All Black side sweeping all before it.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-New Zealand 1st, Wales 7th

France 27, Argentina 26 in Paris

France won by 1 point. I predicted Argentina by 3

Reviews

France by just 1 point. Unlucky Argentina who appeared to dominate the match in the second half. Argentina are on the rise and must be included in either 6 Nations of Tri Nations championships

Preview

This match will be a real test for both teams. France, host of the 2007 Rugby World Cup Finals, comes from two comprehensive defeats by New Zealand. They will be looking for a moral boosting win. Argentina has had a splendid European tour with good wins over England and Italy. A win against France will set them up for a grand World Cup tournament.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-France 5th, Argentina 6th

South Africa 25, England 14 at Twickenham

South Africa won by 11 points. I predicted England by 5.

Reviews

Oh dear! A wobbly South Africa defeated an awful England side. The England team has now slumped to an all time low.

Preview

The second test between these two teams will be interesting. There was not much between them last weekend but England may well be slightly stronger with a more complete team combination thanks to the top clubs releasing players.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-England 3rd, South Africa 4th. CHANGE

Australia 44, Scotland 15 at Murrayfield

Australia won by 29 points. I predicted Australia by 2

Reviews

A great and much needed win by the Wallabies against a very disappointing Scottish side.

Previews

Australia has had a shocking time in the Northern Hemisphere this season. Scotland won’t make life any easier than the Irish. I still think Scotland may be the surprise package in this year’s 6 Nations Championship.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Australia 8th, Scotland 9th

Italy 41, Canada 6 in Rome

Italy won by 35 points. I predicted Italy by 20.

Reviews

Preview

Italy has had an average season to date. They ran the Australians close and then lost to Argentina last weekend. Lack of game time will tell against the Canadians. Why they couldn’t play some European national sides as well as a test against Wales is beyond me!

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Italy 11th, Canada 19th

Japan 54, Korea 0 in Hong Kong (WCQ Asia R3; 20th Asia Rugby Champ.)

Japan won by 54 points. I predicted Japan by 15.

Review

Well, it was a walkover. A very disappointing result for the Koreans who had been targeting this match.

Preview

This will be a nervous match for the Japanese. They are in a must win situation to progress directly to the 2007 Rugby World Cup. It will either motivate them to super human efforts in which case they will walk all over the Koreans or a nervous crisis will set in and they will bumble along and allow the Koreans a sneak in.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Japan 18th, Korea 22nd

                                        Asia Table-Japan 1st, Korea 2nd

Portugal 11, Georgia 11, in Lisbon (WCQ Europe R5, Playoff 2nd leg)

Match drawn. I predicted Georgia by 4 points.

Reviews

Portugal needed to win by 15 points or more to go to France in 2007. They couldn’t do that but a draw was still a significant result. Georgia is not as strong at the moment as they were in 2003.

Previews

Portugal has proven to be a tough team at home and so I think the Georgians will find out.

Moldova 43, Netherlands 7 in Chisinau (ENC 2A)

Moldova won by 36 points. I predicted Moldova by 30.

Reviews

Are the Moldovans the new rising power from Eastern Europe?

Moldovia is a tough team to play at home as the Germans found out last weekend. The Netherlands are not as strong a team as Germany.

COMPUTER PROBLEMS (14.11)

My computer has experienced yet another crash, albeit partly, and I have lost most work for the last week plus some other seriously important files containing years of data. Fortunately they were backed up but there is a lot of work in reformatting and reloading. Because November is my busiest work month this site may not be properly functional until January. It’s all run on a minimum budget and I really need a new computer that isn’t going to happen soon. Bugger!

ABSA AFRICAN LEOPARDS to play BRITISH ARMY(08.11)

“The 2006 Leopards will represent the best of rugby in Africa,” said Abdelaziz Bougja, President of the Confederation of Rugby. “The team will draw players from nine different countries, and the match will be televised on terrestrial TV in 32 African countries.

“Rugby is growing throughout Africa, and the Leopards will reflect the rising standards throughout the continent.”

The African Leopards played their inaugural match against a South African Students team in Johannesburg last year, and continue to develop as a continental team that bridges the gap between Africa’s emerging national teams and higher levels of the game.

“We are delighted to be hosting the African Leopards,” said Gary Stocks, manager of the British Army Senior XV, “and we look forward to staging an outstanding rugby occasion.” “The ABSA African Leopards squad, the official representative team of the Confederation of African Rugby, to play the Senior XV, British Army, at Aldershot Military Stadium, near London, at 19h00 on Thursday November 23, 2006, is announced.
