THIS WEEKEND 20 AUGUST
20.08.2005
South Africa 22, Australia 19 in Perth
(Tri-Nations)
South
Africa won by 3 points. I predicted South Africa by 7.
South
Africa won its first test match in Australia since 1998 and won against a major
international team away for the first time in 15 tests. This win puts it well
ahead of New Zealand and Australia on the Tri-Nations table.
Two
breakaway tries at crucial moments won South Africa the game. On both occasions
Australia was full on attack and pressurising the Springbok line.
It
was a gutsy performance by an Australian team under pressure all week after
their recent loses. It may not be enough to save the coach and the captain
whose jobs may well go following the teams’ fourth loss in a row
Australian
rugby fans have to go back 25 years to find the last occasion the national
rugby team lost four in a row. In 1981-82 Australia lost successively to Wales,
Scotland and England on their northern tour and then lost the first test to the
touring Scotland team in July 1982.
Elton
Flatley was replaced by Clive Rathbone minutes from the start of the game as a
result of a warm-up injury. John Roe came onto the bench leaving Australia with
only two back reserves. Adam Ashley-Cooper made his test debut when he came on
late in the game.

Uganda 20, Zimbabwe 9 at Kampala Rugby
Club Ground in Kampala (WCQ Africa Rnd 1B Playoff 2nd leg) HT 12-6
Uganda won by 11
points. I predicted Uganda by 3 but not to qualify.
Zimbabwe
crashed out of the 2007 Rugby World Cup when it lost to Uganda in Kampala in
very wet conditions.
Zimbabwe
picked only home talent as either overseas-based Zimbabwe players turned down
ZRU offers or the ZRU could not afford the costs.

New Zealand 30, Australia 13 in Sydney
(Tri-Nations & Bledisloe Cup)
New
Zealand won by 17 points.
New Zealand has slipped ahead of Australia on the points
table in this competition. They missed out on a crucial bonus point by not
scoring four tries
that may count in the final tally. Bonus points decided the
tournament last year. With this victory New Zealand retained the Bledisloe Cup,
the symbol of Trans Tasman rivalry.
Australia took off to a 13-0 lead early on but New Zealand
clawed their way back to 13-10 at halftime. New Zealand was beginning to show
the dominance by half time that would pave the way in the second half for a
memorable victory.
Australia looked ragged and disorganised at times in the
second half as injuries to key Australian players before and during the match
began to take its toll. In the end New Zealand were better organised on the
day. The score could well have been higher for the Kiwis if they had taken all
their scoring chances.
Australia head to Perth to face the South Africans next
weekend in another crucial must-win match for them. With the injury count
growing Eddie Jones could be scrambling to find enough fit players of
international standard to take the field.
This win allows New Zealand to jump from 9th to
3rd on the GWC Rugby Rankings, a position more in line with their
current form. They are behind South Africa 2nd and Wales 1st.

South Africa 22, New Zealand 16 in
Capetown (Tri-Nations)
South
Africa won by 6 points. I predicted New Zealand by 2.
South
Africa made it 2 out of 2 in the 2005 Tri-Nations Championship on Saturday when
they defeated New Zealand 22-16 in Capetown. They have proved the point that it
is becoming increasingly difficult for teams to win away matches in this
competition.
New
Zealand always looked dangerous but as South Africa applied the pressure as the
match progressed they also looked more likely to make mistakes. And make them
they did. The mistakes they made and the South African defence coast them the
game.
The
result still places New Zealand 8th on the GWC Rugby Ranking World
Table, a position which flies in the face of all other ranking systems. New
Zealand has simply not won against top teams since defeating France last year.

Togo Wins U18 Rugby Tournament.(06.08)
Togo U18 team emerged the
winner of the Confederation of African Rugby U18 Rugby World Cup African
Northern zone II Tournament played over the weekend in Obuasi the Ghanaian
mining city.
Togo defeated host Ghana 29
points to 03 points in the highly exciting finals, which was watched by a crowd
of over 2000 spectators mostly students of the local polytechnic. The
tournament received good sponsorship from the Ghanaian Ministry of Sports,
International Rugby Board, Confederation of African Rugby, and local Ghanaian
companies such as SG-SSB, ATL, EST TRAVEL, STAR ASSURANCE, YES MINIRAL WATER
& TROPIC OIL to mention a few.
The tournament was one of
the best well organised Rugby event in recent years, compliment of the
hardworking Ghanaian Rugby President – Madam Gifty Annan-Myers, who was however
very disappionted at the absence of Nigeria at the Tournament.
The Ghanaian team was
coached by Nigerian Coach Goerge Ladipo, and was put together after a recent inter-
schools knockout tournament among some selected schools in Accra.
Referees for the tournament
were drawn from Nigeria – Ntiense Williams, Ndri Kan Ignace & Soumahoro
Bakari of Ivory Coast, while the match Commissioner Mr K Badri was from Morocco.
