Poland caused an upset defeating Ukraine 22-0 at home.

Comment
Unbelievable. I don't think anyone saw that coming. Has the work of the South Africans finally come to fruition or is this the end of the Ukrainian Golden generation? The Ukraine definitely missed Chaika at tight head prop, but the Poles played so well. Nowicki in the line out stole so many Ukrainian throw ins. Bartoszek was immense in the loose and the pack shoved the Ukraine off the ball in the scrum many times. Good for them. The Ukrainians weren't at their best though. Vertilesky at 8 wasn't match fit and was eclipsed by club mate Mirosz. The Poles knew exactly what Kramarenko would do and stopped him with incredible defence. Good for them. The challenge is now the game against Portugal in Feb before the Polish season starts, but after today's performance, who knows what's possible?’

18.09.2016

New Zealand clinched their fourth Rugby Championship in a row with an emphatic 41-13 win over South Africa in Christchurch. The superiority of the All Blacks was plain to see although the Springbox gave them a torrid time in the first half. This is a young South African side and, unlike the All Blacks, had few experienced players to take the place of those retiring after the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Australia sprinted to a 21-0 lead after only 14 minutes of the game against Argentina in Perth. This was a buffer against which Argentina were always going to struggle against and although they came back strongly Australia’s defence was up to the task and the Wallabies ran out winners 36-20. The win pushes Australia up into second place without any hope of overtaking the New Zealanders. The loss leaves Argentina at the bottom of the table.

The next round, on 1 October, sees Australia travel to South Africa whilst the All Blacks face up to Argentina in Buenos Aires.

COUNTRY DATA

This is a new section of rugby test data on this site. This section hopes to cover each nation’s international rugby stats year-by-year.

This is a work in progress as I gradually upload the data for each nation. Click on the nation below and see where I’m up to.
If you can contribute to this data either by noticing errors or by adding to what I don’t have then contact me at rugint@bigpond.net.au
A special thanks to Stuart Farmer whose data on scrum.com for the main nations is, in most cases, my comparison.

Competition explanation
‘they only establish a day one fixture in order to try and ensure that the title is not decided until the final day of competition. If it all works out, the two undefeated teams should meet in Round 3. However, if one of the day one losers wins in Round 2, it can complicate things. Regardless, no match up is repeated in the tournament. At least, this has never occurred in the past.’
