THIS WEEKEND

18.08.2007

France 22, England 9 in Marseilles

France won by 13 points. I predicted France by 6.

Previews

France and England clash again. Last weekend France was victorious 21-15 at Twickenham against an English side not at full strength.

LAST FIVE ENCOUNTERS

11.08.2007 France 21-15 at Twickenham (RWC Warm up)

11.03.2007 England 26-18 at Twickenham (6 Nations Int. Tournament)

27.03.2004 France 24-21 in Paris (6 Nations Int. Tournament)

England last won in Paris in 2000 when they won 15-9.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-France 7th, England 9th

                                           Europe Table-France 1st, England 5th.

Prediction: A right old struggle in this match. France will be slightly below par up front but will just hold on against a ferocious English onslaught. France by 6 points.

Wales 27, Argentina 20 in Cardiff

Wales won by 7 points. I predicted Argentina by 15.

Previews

Argentina will get its first serious World Cup Rugby warm up against Wales. Los Pumas defeated a Chilean XV 70-14 last weekend. Wales came back from a 5-62 hammering from England to defeat Scotland last weekend.

LAST FIVE ENCOUNTERS

17.06.2006 Argentina 45-27 in Buenos Aires

11.06.2006 Argentina 27-25 in Puerto Madryn

19.06.2004 Wales 35-20 in Buenos Aires

12.06.2004 Argentina 50-44 in Tucaman

10.11.2001 Argentina 30-16 in Cardiff

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Argentina 3rd, Wales 8th CHANGE

Prediction: Wales have to go back to 1999 and the famous Rugby World Cup opener to brag about a win over Argentina at home. Since then Argentina has won comfortably in 2001 and then again against motley Welsh touring sides to Argentina in 2004 and 2006. If past results don’t really matter then the fact that Argentina is a rising world rugby power must count. Wales on the other hand is really struggling to find any sort of form leading up to the Rugby World Cup. I expect Argentina to outmuscle the Welsh up front, Argentina to out swerve them in the backs and a chorus of Welsh voices through out the valleys baying for the blood of one Gareth Jenkins. Argentina by 15.

Italy 36, Japan 12 in Saint Vincent

Italy won by 24 points. I predicted Italy by 50.

Previews

Japan arrived in Italy after defeating an Asia Barbarians team 69-10 last Friday in an unofficial test match.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS

11.06.2006 Italy 52-6 in Tokyo

03.07.2004 Italy 32-19 in Tokyo

21.10.1976 Italy 25-3 in Padua

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Italy 10th, Japan 17th.

Prediction: Japan’s last two matches against Italy have been at home and on both occasions Italy won easily and comfortably respectively. I can’t see Japan improving by playing the Italians away. Italy has a mountain of test caps in its side compared to the Japanese. John Kirwan’s new team will suffer in the hands of his old one! Italy by 50 points.

Canada 42, Portugal 12 in Ottawa

Canada won by 30 points. I predicted Canada by 25.

Preview

The Portuguese continue their Rugby World Cup preparations with a short tour of Canada. They will play a full test against Canada this Saturday. Previously they lost 16-19 to London Welsh last month, defeated Coventry RFC 22-20 last weekend and then 18-34 to a Canadian Barbarians XV in Toronto Wednesday. Portugal will then go to Italy for their final preparations, and then will play a Japan XV in Lisbon on the 25th.

These two teams have never met before. The closest we get is last Wednesday when a Canadian XV out muscled the Portuguese. The Portuguese are going to have more problems up front against a Canadian side tough in the forwards.

GWC Rugby Rankings: World Table-Canada 18th, Portugal 20th

Prediction: The Portuguese are going to suffer the same fate in the 2007 Rugby World Cup as the Namibians and the Japanese. They just will not be able to out muscle the opposition up front. End of the match nowadays. Canada by 25 points.

Teams

Canada

Portugal

TBA

Spain 18, Uruguay 10 in Montevideo

Spain won by 8 points. I predicted Spain by 6.

Preview

Spain eased passed Chile 30-25 in Santiago on Wednesday. Uruguay will be a formidable opponent on home soil. The Uruguayans will be smarting over their loss to Portugal earlier in the year. The Portuguese grabbed the final Rugby World Cup spot from Uruguay by the narrowest of margins. Spain plays in the same European rugby tournament as Portugal.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS

01.09.2001 Spain 16-14 in Montevideo

02.10.1999 Uruguay 37-15 in Galashiels (RWC Pool A)

28.08.1999 Uruguay 20-3 in L’Aquilla (L’Aquilla Tournament)

02.09.1995 Uruguay 47-10 in Montevideo

02.08.1987 Spain 18-6 in Montevideo

GWC Rugby Rankings: Spain 14th, Uruguay 21st.

Prediction: Uruguay is far from the outfit that played in the nineties, culminating in an honourable exhibition at the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Spain on the other hand is crawling back up the international rugby ladder. Uruguay will be tough at home. ! A close won. Spain by 6 points.

Botswana 37, Tanzania 14 in Gaborone (CAR Castel Cup, Div.2, South Final)

Botswana won by 23 points. I predictedTanzania by 7.

Previews

Tanzania and Botswana won their respective zone finals. Originally there were to be an away-home playoff for the final but this idea seems to have fallen through. The winner of this match will play the winner of the northern zones. Burkino Faso won one of the zones and Nigeria the other. Nigeria’s win though is under review after complaints as to the way the tournament was run in the Nigerian capital Lagos.

These two teams have met only once before, in 2004. Botswana won 38-12 in a round robin tournament that included Swaziland.

GWC Rugby Rankings: Africa Table-Tanzania 13th, Botswana 15th.

Prediction: This will be much closer encounter than the 2004 game. Tanzania by 7 points, and will go onto to play either Burkino Faso or Nigeria to win the second division.

CARIBBEAN TOURNAMENT CANCELLED (18.08)

CHAOS IN THE CARIBBEAN (17.08)

Some things in life we have control over and some things we don’t. The senior men’s and women’s Caribbean rugby tournament, involving teams from Mexico, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda, Barbados and the Cayman Islands, is due to kick off in the Caymans this Sunday. Richard Adams, Technical Director of Rugby from the Cayman Islands RFU, explains that things are not going to plan.

Firstly Guyana is a possible non starter due to flight complications. Thus the draw has been rearranged. There are now two draws possible; one with Guyana and one without. Hurricane Dean is making its way across the Caribbean and is heading towards the Cayman Islands. “If Hurricane Dean threatens us closely on Sunday evening as it seems it may do we will probably [be] shut down by the Government for Sunday action. If we do not take a direct blow and the pitch is useable then I would guess that the tournament will start on either Monday 20th afternoon or Tuesday 21st afternoon with the finals pushed back to Sunday 26th as I believe all of the teams will still be here then, assuming that they manage to travel from Trinidad and Barbados ok over the next 24 - 36 hours”.

That is as much as Richard and his team of rugby workers on Cayman Islands can do.

The draw (without Guyana and Hurricane Dean)
