THE GAME OF RUGBY IS RAPIDLY EXPANDING WORLD WIDE. THIS WEB SITE'S MAIN FUNCTION IS THE RESEARCHING, COLLECTING, COLLATING, RECORDING AND UPDATING OF INTERNATIONAL RUGBY RESULTS AND RECORDS

Web sites I recommend this month

This is a new web site for me. Parts are still under construction and as yet little up to date information on the national team and its fixtures/results. It’s a start.

THIS WEEKEND 22/23 APRIL

23.04.2006

Japan 50,  Korea 14 in Tokyo (WCQ Asia Round 4, Division 1)

Japan won by 36 points. I predicted Korea by 3

“Japan did enough in the first 50 minutes of this Test to put Korea away & then went to sleep. In total, Japan scored 8 tries to two & although they showed some signs of fluency in the first half the second stanza could only be described as woeful. Japan went off the boil & failed to play for the full 80 minutes. This has been a trait of Japanese national sides over the years that for some reason have traditionally had significant lapses in concentration throughout a Test. Good sides are cruel & relentless in putting weak opposition to the sword. However, on this particular Sunday afternoon in Tokyo the CBs nearly allowed an enthusiastic but glaringly outclassed Korea to steal the second half.

Korea started the match with a flourish, turning down two easy shots at penalty to go for lineouts. Unfortunately, the enterprise amounted to zero on the scoreboard but the small crowd was well entertained. Then, in the 10th minute prop Yuichi Hisadomi dotted down for the first try of the Test on the back of a Japanese rolling maul. Japan then ran Korea ragged with further first half tries coming to backline players Takei, Oto, Ito & Yoshida. Throughout the first stanza the overall lack of skill, technique & exposure to international level Rugby in the Korean play was brought to light. Though, for a country that can confess to only having five senior clubs & fifteen universities to choose a national side from anything else can hardly be expected. Japan led 33-0 at halftime.

Trundling lock Tsuyoshi Sato scored soon after the resumption of play & then Daisuke Ohata had to work hard for his first try of the match in the 4th minute. Ohata scored again in the fifth minute of injury time to notch up his 62nd try in 54 Tests. The world record set by David Campese (1982-96) of Australia is 64 tries from 101 Tests, so the Japanese Rugby public is waiting with baited breath for the 30-year-old veteran to re-write the record books. Nevertheless, in between the two Ohata tries the CBs tried their utmost to kill the Test as a spectacle by playing down to the standard of the Koreans. Just like the week before against the Arabian Gulf, passes drifted forward or were dropped & poor kicking dominated a mistake riddled extended period of the game. If the CBs are going to take this attitude & degree of performance to Carisbrook in Dunedin in June to face the Junior All Blacks, heaven only knows how dire the consequences could be.

Coach Elissalde now has 3 weeks to shape a winning formula before taking on Georgia in Osaka. After that it is the Pacific Five Nations where poor kicking, turnover ball & lapses in concentration will be severely punished. The clock is ticking.”

THIS WEEKEND 15/16 APRIL

16.04.2006

Japan 82, Arabian Gulf 9 in Tokyo (WCQ Asia Round 4, Div. 1)

Japan won by 73 points. I predicted Japan by 50

This was an easy win for Japan.

“The Arabian Gulf battled bravely before going down 82-9 against Japan in Tokyo in Asian qualifying for the 2007 World Cup in France.

The Gulf´s squad of amateurs led twice early on. Fly-half Sebastian Mouchet (Dubai Dragons) gained the first score of the match with a drop goal and although the three points were soon cancelled out, full-back James Tometzki was on target with the first of two penalties to regain the advantage for the visitors in the ninth minute.

Japan´s professionals, who prepared for the match with a two-week training camp in France, stepped up a gear to surge 27-9 in front at the turnaround before their superior fitness told in the second period for a convincing win.

Gulf coach Mark Butterfield said: “I’m very proud of the team. The forwards in particular were outstanding and held their own, winning all our own line-outs and scrums."

Not a lot resting on this match as Germany appears to have this Pool sewn up. Croatia looks the likely winner but don’t underestimate Malta at home.

So far in this pool Malta have lost to Germany 0-43 and defeated Serbia-Montenegro 16-3.

Croatia has defeated Serbia-Montenegro 26-9 and lost to Belgium 20-26.

COOK ISLAND V TONGA GAMES ANNOUNCED (12.04)

Cook Islands qualified to play Tonga after defeating Papua New Guinea home and away last season. Cook Islands and Tonga will play a home-away two test series in June and July. The winner will have the right to play an Asian nation in the repechage round. The Cook Islands are not happy that these dates leave them with little time to organise trials and warm-up games whereas Tonga will have the new Pacific Tournament to gain match time.

Senegal 20, Cameroun 16 in Dakar (Africa Cup Group C)

Senegal won by 4 points. I predicted Senegal by 20

Senegal were expected to defeat Cameroun comfortably. At half time the Camerounians were ahead 13-6 and in charge of the game. The second half saw the Senegalese tighten their play, put pressure on the visitors and keep them well in their own half, As a result the visitors began to make mistakes and Senegal gradually crept back into the game. Two penalties late in the game by Steeve Sargos clinched the narrow win.
