GETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

JANUARY 2006

THE GAME OF RUGBY IS RAPIDLY EXPANDING WORLD WIDE. THIS WEB SITE'S MAIN FUNCTION IS THE RESEARCHING, COLLECTING, COLLATING, RECORDING AND UPDATING OF INTERNATIONAL RUGBY RESULTS AND RECORDS

Web sites I recommend this month

http://www.rugbyworldcup.com  This site, an offshoot from IRB, looks to have all the matches covered in scores but not so much in detail. A good overview. In 3 languages.

http://www.melbourne2006.com.au/Sports+and+Venues/Rugby%207s  The 7’s version of the game is being represented again at the Commonwealth Games. My site does not cover the 7’s game. This link appears to cover it well.

www.rugby.se The rugby site for the game in Sweden. Has an English version. Once had a full team listing for every Swedish game since 1949. Very good value.

http://www.rugby.gr/index.php  The official Greek rugby site. Greece played its first ever international rugby match v an Austrian XV last October. These guys are so proud of their rugby and their team. Great site.

http://statistics.scrum.com/rugby_stats_01.asp This is the place, I think, where Planet-rugby’s once famous results data base ended up. It also has a player search as well. My PC is reasonably powerful so for this site to take 30 seconds to load is too long to wait in this age of technology. Is it as good a data base as Rugbyinternational.net? You be the judge.

WELCOME TO 2006. ALL THE BEST FOR THE YEAR AHEAD

The month of January is usually very quiet on the international rugby scene. Therefore my efforts this month is to update as much of the data on this site as possible and to set up the year ahead.

JAPAN UPDATE (31.01)

From RiJ. The man in Japan.

“Season 2006 for the CBs

The season ahead for the CBs is taking a lot of shifts & turns with more details slowly emerging. The announcement of the Pacific Five Nations (P5N) by the IRB on January 12 helped greatly with planning the season. Now, the formal schedule is yet to be announced, but RiJ has it that dates for the 4 Japan games are as stated below. With the advent of P5N it also looks as though the Super (Powers) Cup that has been held the last 3 years with Canada, USA, Japan & one other country is dead in the water. Changing horses mid-stream? Further, it looks like the Asian Qualifier against Arabian Gulf will be played in Tokyo to get away from the U19 World Championships happening in Dubai at the same time.

Late Feb – a provisional squad announced.

Early March – medicals

Late March – 2-week camp in France (full details yet to be announced). Initially, there were plans for matches against Spain & Morocco during this camp, though talk of this seems to be going cold. The camp is set to be held in the spa town of Dax, situated in the south-west department of Landes, on the River Adour not too far from the Atlantic coast. This would also be the base camp for Japan during RWC 07, so it is not a bad idea to have an early look around.

April 16 – RWC Asian Qualifier against Arabian Gulf in Tokyo.

April 23 – RWC Asian Qualifier against Korea, in Tokyo.

May – Early talk was that Canada was set to tour Japan in May, but this too has run cold. Talk of Portugal coming now, but the JRFU is looking for some other games for the CBs over this month.

June 3 -  P5N v Tonga in Japan.

June 11 – v Italy in Japan.

June 17 or 18 – P5N v Samoa away.

June 24 or 25 – P5N v Junior ABs  away.

July 1 – P5N v Fiji in Japan.

Nov 20-26 – final Asian Qualifiers for RWC 07, in Sri Lanka.”
