THE WEEKEND 26/27 FEBRUARY

27.02.2005

Ireland 19, England 13 in Dublin (6 Nations International Championship)

Ireland won by 6 points. I predicted Ireland by 15

A tense match resulted in a try a piece and a win to Ireland in which the lead changed hands many times. In the end Ireland sneaked ahead on kicks and England, the World Cup holders, slumped to their third straight loss in this tournament. The result could mean a Wales v Ireland showdown for the 6 Nations Trophy. Ireland will have to defeat France in Dublin in two weeks time for this to happen.

26.02.2005

Scotland 18, Italy 10 at Murrayfield (6 Nations International Championship)

France v Wales in Paris (6 Nations International Championship)

This is a crucial match in this championship. Wales will travel to Paris with all the form to take this match and have a foot in the door of this championship.

Wales showed last weekend that they are the form team in this competition. The Principality is simply buzzing with hopes of a true revival of Welsh rugby.

France is so unpredictable and when they are not playing well they are even more unpredictable. They just managed to push past an out of sorts England last weekend through goal kicking and may be returning to some sort of form. The team changes for this match will see France put a very strong team onto the park. With the match to be played on their home turf anything could happen. Wouldn’t you just love to be there?

For Wales, two changes from the team that defeated Italy. Daffydd Jones is out injured and replaced by Ryan Jones. Winger Hal Luscombe is out and replaced by Kevin Morgan. Rhys Williams comes onto the bench.

France has made a number of changes from the team that defeated England. Fullback Julien Laharrague will play his first test, Yannick Jauzion comes into the midfield, wing Aurelien Rougerie comes back from injury, Yannick Nyanga comes in to number eight and flank Serge Betson returns to play his 46th test.

Portugal v Czech Republic in Lisbon (European Nations Cup)

Portugal is the form team in this competition at present. Czech republic will put up a great fight and will attack through their backs. Mind you so will Portugal as both teams seem to have electric back lines. This game should be a played at a fast and furious pace.

Romania v Russia in Timosoara (European Nations Cup)

The great and old rivals of Eastern Europe clash in this beautiful old Western Romanian city of Timosoara, close to the Serbian and Hungarian borders.

Romania will be a different team in this competition than that which caved in to Wales last November. Russia has struggled on the World and European scene of late but did win well against the Romanians in Russia last season. I can’t see Romania losing this one at home.

Georgia v Ukraine in Tibillisi (European Nations Cup)

In the early days of independence from Russia in the 90’s these teams played each other regularly. Georgia won all those encounters if not always comfortably. The rugby world has changed since those days.

Ukraine has a daunting task as new chums in this competition and they will find the Georgians far removed from the raw recruits of the 90’s.

The Ukrainians crashed against Portugal 16-36 at home last November in their opening challenge for this cup. They will find playing away in Georgia even more of a worry.

Georgia is regaining some of their pre-World Cup 2003 form although they dropped the game against Portugal a few weeks ago. Georgia will rely almost entirely upon muscle in this competition and the Ukrainians will struggle to hold them in the forwards.

The Georgians have made some wholesale changes to the line up that took the field in Lisbon. The selectors have appeared to use the opportunity playing Ukraine to use some fringe selection players.

Two players, Magrakvelidze and Shvelidze, have been allowed to play for their French clubs, Mtchedishvili is injured, the others not selected. In come a mostly new front row in Kopaliani, Javelidze and Zerakashvili, lock Datunashvili and utility flanker/back Katsadze.

In the backs Pirilashvili and rugby league player Khachivashvili have moved in whilst Urjukashvili and Guiorgadze are out.

England found the secret to scoring tries. France found their way by kicking goals and outscoring England by one point.

This win has effectively eliminated England from any chance of winning the six-nations trophy. Its now between France, Ireland and Wales

Spain 36, Andorra 14 in Andorra La Vela (WCQ Europe, Rnd 2, Pool A) HT 20-7

Spain won by 22 points. I predicted Spain by 70

Spain was expected to run away with this match. They dominated throughout but often could not penetrate a determined Andorran defence. The astute boot and goal kicking ability of Esteban Roque made the difference.

Ireland 28, Italy 17 in Rome (6 Nations International Championship) HT 8-6

Ireland won by 11 points. I predicted Ireland by 30

Ireland bumbled, fumbled and struggled against a plucky Italian side in Rome. Italy matched and even surpassed Ireland in every department except speed out wide which turned out to be the difference between the teams. The gap between the top and the near bottom doesn't look so wide after all.

France 16, Scotland 9 in Paris (6 Nations International Championship)

France won by 7 points. I predicted France by 20.

A very spirited performance by Scotland who won everything but the match. As I said in my preview France could play poorly and still win. They did. It was some lucky refreeing decisions that helped France and on this performance they will struggle to retain their 6 Nations crown. Scotland will continue to rise. Hopefully this will signal a new era for them.

Wales 11, England 9 in Cardiff (6 Nations International Championship) HT 8-3

Wales won by 2 points. I predicted Wales by 3.

Wales broke a 12 year hoodoo with this historic win over arch-rivals England.

This was the sort of win that stirs the hearts of even non-Welshmen( and women) for its the underdog taking it to the top dog. Wales deserved the win as they had the bigger spirit and played the better football. England will need to look at their try scoring ability because in this game it was virtually non existant. The sledge hammer forward effort is not enough in the modern game.

Martyn Williams played his 50th test for Wales.

Portugal 18, Georgia 14 in Lisbon (European Nations Cup) HT 11-3

Portugal won by 4 points. I predicted Portugal by 7

Portugal won in the last minute relecting same result last time Georgia played in Portugal. Very disappointing for Georgia but an exciting win for Portugal. Sounds like fair bit of Argy Bargy in last few moments of the game with the situation getting out of hand.

Replacement player Lekso Gugava was sent off in the 80th minute. Looks like David Ashveti, playing his first international since 1998, was a late replacement for David Khinchaguishvili. ‘The game was shown live on Georgian Public TV Channel 1 despite nation-wide mourning of Prime Minister Zurab Jvania. Lelos wore black armbands and a minute silence was observed before the kickoff.’

France XV 30, Spain 15 in Madrid  HT 15-15

France XV won by 15 points. I predicted Spain by 10

After holding the French Amateur team to 15-15 at halftime the Spanish national team, in front of a home crowd of 5,000, had to give way to pressure and conceded a last minute try.

This was a bruising encounter, a match with tension and atmosphere in which the Czech Republic referee had to stop the match on occasions to calm the players down. In the end the superior goal kicking of the French was the difference between these teams. Spanish coach Gerard Glynn was pleased with the way his team played the game, their attitude and their willingness to confront and compete with the French players.

Spains next venture is to play Andrra on February 12th as part of their World Cup 2007 qualifying programme. The French Amateurs will play the English Counties side.
